Joaquin Phoenix to play Joker in origin movie?

Joaquin Phoenix to play Joker in origin movie?

Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is attached as producer to what has been described as an '80s crime film with a dark and gritty tone. WB had no comment.

Phoenix's supposed new Joker character is not to be confused with the Joker Jared Leto made famous in the DC comic's flick, "Suicide Squad".

To recall, it was a year ago when Warner Bros announced that it would be producing a solo "Joker" movie that will be separate from the studio's current brand of DC movies, the DCEU, which interconnects the story of other DC movies.

As alluded to earlier, Leto will not be featured in this film, since the movie would fall under a yet-to-be-announced new banner of DC Comics that would give rise to a whole new set of original storylines.

Todd Phillips will co-write and direct the movie and although studio negotiations haven't began, he already has his eyes set on Phoenix for the lead role, Variety exclusively reports. Even Leonardo DiCaprio was rumored to have been the first person approached to star in Phillips' standalone film, but that clearly isn't the direction he's going with it.

Joaquin Phoenix is talented enough to produce a range of characters that go every which way but through his portrayal of the nefarious villain of Commodus in Gladiator, an intellectual savant and the guy that was loved to be hated we believe he is ideal for the role of The Joker. The as-yet-untitled project will assume the style of a crime drama as opposed to a typical comic book hero production. According to Variety, in the past, the actor was considered for the role of Lex Luthor in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", as well as another role in Disney-Marvel's "Doctor Strange". He has most recently starred in Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here, Gus Van Sant's Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot and Garth Davis's Mary Magdalene.
