Latest VLC Player 3.0 update brings support for Chromecast

VideoLAN has launched VLC 3.0 across Windows, Mac, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS and Android, as well as Android TV and Apple TV. It got a major update today after a long wait of two years. However, the Chromecast support will only be available on Android and Chromebooks for now, while the feature is in its beta mode. If you select Renderer, you'll see your Chromecast device (s) listed.

The Chrome OS support is only for devices supporting Android apps, and it looks like (thankfully for safety) Android Auto is only for audio files.

VLC 3.0 also supports up to 8K 360-degree video formats, along with 3D audio to enhance the experience.

VLC also offers better support for Blu-Ray movies.

VLC 3.0 released: Chromecast, 8K, HDR, Android PiP, iPhone X optimization

The free software also promises to go a little bit easier on your processors, thanks to the addition of hardware decoding. So VLC has to be a http server like youtube.com, and provide the video in a Chromecast compatible format. For all but the last of those, it's now available to download for free.

The biggest change in the new VLC is the Chromecast support. You can use VLC 3.0 even if you're using an Android Gingerbread phone or Windows XP. VLC 3.0 works with Blu-ray's Java-based menus, and is even optimized for the notch on the new iPhone X. There's also Chromecast support for all devices and even in formats "not supported natively", while audio passthrough for HD audio codecs is featured in VLC 3.0 as well.

You can also download a few quid to the voluntary group who's been striving to bring this update to you for the last few years. With VLC, you have media of any format.
