Haryana CM speaks to Parrikar, objects to TCP Minister's statement

(G.N.S) Dt. 10 Panaji A video of a tourist urinating from the window of a bus on a busy road in Goa was the tipping point for the coastal state's Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai, who on Friday called domestic tourists arriving in Goa "scum of the earth". If you compare Goans to rest of India, we are high in per capita income, social and political consciousness, we are much superior than people who are coming in.

"Your Chief Minister is pushing to increase tourists coming into Goa".

"The tourists who come here should take care of Goa's culture and Goanness, otherwise I will chase them away", Ajgaonkar said at the tourism department's Food and Cultural Festival. He said what he had spoken yesterday reflected sentiments of the people of Goa who were disgusted with a few tourists who come and use Goa as a dumping ground and create nuisance. The north Indian states are responsible for the problems that Goa has today.

Sardesai released a video message on online platforms after he was quoted by certain sections of the media as terming domestic tourists "scum of the earth".

Goa's beaches attract more than six million visitors annually while the foreign footfall is around half a million.

He said the existing government should change Goa's tourism policy and should discourage the 'budget domestic tourists.' An unapologetic Sardesai said north Indians were trying to convert Goa into another Harayana as they have no civic sense. They are not bothered about Goa.

"Those who come from Delhi, Haryana and Gurgaon, they have a tendency, they want to gobble everything".

While refusing comment on North Indians, Sardesai said he preferred a a model where the rich visit Goa as a tourist destination, to benefit the state's poor.

Sardesai is the president of the Goa Forward Party which is part of the BJP government in Goa.

"We are fighting another kind of battle where these FSI people are coming and affecting our ethos", he added. The offensive video, that has gone viral, prompted the minister to demand that Goa needs to re-orient tourism and look for quality as well as high-end tourists. "I feel that they should take action against those violating the law, as per the law", Ajgaonkar said while speaking to this daily.
