Kim Jong Un invites South Korean President Moon to Pyongyang

Kim Jong Un invites South Korean President Moon to Pyongyang

The U.N. says Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had a brief exchange with North Korea's nominal head of state and "reiterated his expectation and hope that all parties will use dialogue to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

But, of course the biggest point of interest is whether the North Korean leader's closest confidante, the only sister Kim Yo-jong is delivering a written or a verbal message from Kim Jong-un and jut what that may be.

After meetings with South Korean president Moon Jae-in and Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, Mr Pence said there should be no consideration of using the Games as an opening for substantive talks with the North until its nuclear programme is up for negotiation.

The last summit between leaders of the two Koreas occurred in 2007 when South Korean President Roh Moo Hyun and Kim Jong-il met in Pyongyang, North Korea's capital.

Pence, who is leading the U.S. delegation to the Olympics, has accused Pyongyang of using the event for its own ends.

Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam arrived Friday afternoon, leading a senior delegation.

Mike Pence is in Pyeongchang today for the beginning of the 2018 Winter Olympics, and he's been trying to make the most of the soft power show.

North Korea has spent years developing its military, saying it needs to protect itself from USA aggression.

The Trump administration, and successive American administrations before it, has insisted that North Korea must give up its nuclear weapons program if it wants to be treated as part of the global community.

Among the reasons for skepticism: The accusations that South Korea has had to arrange huge payouts for past meetings, and that these earlier encounters, while producing indelible images, have done little to slow North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Moon asked the North Korean delegation during Saturday's meeting to more actively seek dialogue with the United States, saying that "early resumption of dialogue (between the two) is absolutely necessary for developments in the inter-Korean relations as well", the South said.

Moon's office said he told Abe that the talks between the Koreas would not disrupt global efforts to deal with North Korea's nuclear program.

Moon said improved relations between the Koreas may be a step toward resolving the nuclear standoff. Reviving inter-Korean talks is key to the polices of Moon, who says South Korea should be in the driver's seat in global efforts to deal with the North's nuclear threat.

North Korea said Saturday that it will further reinforce its nuclear deterrence against the United States in response to Washington's renewed nuclear commitment to its allies. South Korean participants included senior officials Jeong Eui-yong, Jo Myong-gyoon and Im Jong-suk - the chief presidential secretary.

Pence traveled to South Korea to lead the US delegation to today's opening ceremonies but has used his trip to participate in symbolic events meant to shine a spotlight on North Korea's nuclear program and human-rights abuses.

Before the ice hockey match, the president will also visit the Gangneung Ice Arena where preliminary matches in men's and women's short track speed skating begin at 7:40 p.m.

Quoting a number of diplomatic sources, CNN said yesterday there is a good chance she will invite Mr Moon to visit Pyongyang sometime this year, with Aug 15 being touted as a potential date.

The sister of the North Korean leader has arrived in South Korea, dressed in a black coat and absorbing a barrage of camera flashes.

She smiled brightly as she was greeted by South Korean officials led by Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon at a meeting room at Incheon International Airport.
