North Korea held 'warm' but 'candid' talks with South Korea

Vice President Mike Pence did not deliberately snub North Koreans at an Olympic reception, according to U.S. officials who pushed back on South Korean reports that Pence deliberately came late to a VIP gathering Friday evening and then snubbed officials from Pyongyang.

And as the South appeared to look favorably on warming ties on the Korean Peninsula, Pence insisted Saturday "there is no daylight" among the United States and allies South Korea and Japan in intensifying pressure on the North over its nuclear and missile programs.

Moon hosted the elderly Kim Yong Nam - technically the highest-level Northern official ever to go to the South - and Pyongyang's star representative Kim Yo Jong at the presidential Blue House.

"I leave here very confident that we are going to continue to do the things we've known have to be done to continue to pressure North Korea to abandon their nuclear ambitions". During the games, they're also accompanied by government minders tasked with security, supervision and translation duties who report suspicious activities back to Pyongyang, Young said.

The US has been cautious about the invitation, with vice president Mike Pence also in South Korea to warn the country against "falling for" the North's overtures.

Despite Pence's remarks, the current administrations in Washington and Seoul have at times adopted contrasting tones when it comes to North Korea.

The meeting took place after Kim Yo Jong and other North Korean delegates attended the Olympics' opening ceremony.

The vice president came to Pyeongchang to cheer on American athletes but also keen to warn against falling for the glossy image of the two Koreas who marched in the opening ceremony under one flag.

In Washington, China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi, who was visiting the U.S., told Mr Trump that China hoped it and the United States could increase their coordination on the North Korea issue, China's Foreign Ministry said yesterday.

Seating plans shown on South Korean television just minutes earlier had Pence sitting to Moon's left, directly opposite Kim. However, the U.S. Treasury Department past year included Kim Yo Jong on its list of blacklisted officials over her position as vice director of the ruling Workers' Party's Propaganda and Agitation Department.

The North's official arrived here on Friday as part of a 22-member delegation, led by ceremonial state head Kim Yong-nam.
