Read Trump's letter blocking release of Democratic memo

On Saturday Trump called the Democratic document "a very political and long response memo which they knew, because of sources and methods (and more), would have to be heavily redacted".

"Told them to re-do and send back in proper form!" he wrote.

SHAPIRO: Congressman Adam Schiff of California is the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

President Trump was eager to release the Devin Nunes authored memo last week in the name of "transparency" and the public interest, but when the shoe is on the other foot and Democrats want to release a memo of their own, it's a whole different deal.

The White House said on Friday Mr Trump could not declassify the memo because of "sensitive passages" that create "concerns for national security".

President Donald Trump, facing a looming deadline Friday, said he will "soon" release a letter on the question of whether to approve the release of a memorandum from House Democrats rebutting a controversial Republican memo.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi posted a fiery tweet that claimed Trump's "hypocrisy is on full display".

Democrats warn this does not just amount to a double standard, but also reflects a pattern of attempts by the President to frustrate the investigation because he has something to hide. But, late last night, President Trump announced that he would not release the Democratic memo until changes were made, citing national security issues with the document.

The FBI had also warned against declassifying the Republican document, saying it had "grave concerns about material omissions" that made it misleading, but Trump overrode those concerns and declassified it on February 2.

Despite the GOP memo being discredited by almost every lawyer and expert who read through it as a blatant, politically-motivated attempt to misrepresent the Russian Federation probe as a witch hunt, Trump tried to defend his decision to not release the Democratic rebuttal on grounds of it being too political.

But Trump did not indicate if he would sign off on disclosing the memo, which disputes GOP claims that alleged bias against Trump influenced the FBI's probe of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

In a Saturday morning tweet, Trump accused the Democrats of deliberately drafting a "very political and long" document so that he would be forced to block its release.

Kelly said he had given FBI, DOJ and intelligence officials until Thursday to review the document.

The report caught a number of Republican members of the committee off guard. They could accept Trump's offer for help from the Justice Department to scrub the memo of sensitive information.

Both memos included classified information that the president had to agree could be released. But that would require the support of Republicans on the panel. Much of the underlying evidence, including the warrant application, remain classified.

The Republican document claims that although the Federal Bureau of Investigation had "clear evidence" that the author of the dossier, former British spy Christopher Steele, was biased against then-candidate Trump, it did not convey this to the surveillance court when making its warrant applications.
