You can then click on Payments, which will then prompt you to link to your UPI.

The new "Payments" feature can be accessed from the Chat window in the Attachments menu.

User to user payments on WhatsApp are finally starting to roll out in India, after what we can only surmise was a pretty lengthy development period of over 10 months, since the first public mention of the feature. Unlike Hike Wallet and Paytm Wallet, WhatsApp lets you send and receive money via the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) platform.

WhatsApp commands a strong user base of 250 million across India. Additionally, you will have to create a UPI account (if you don't have one previously) through the UPI app or your respective bank's website/ app.

The potential for WhatsApp to dominate Indian P2P payments is strong, given that millions of people have come online in the region thanks to lower-cost data plans and cheap smartphones.

Users who already have the feature need to go to their friend's profile on WhatsApp.

It is worth to note that the feature is exclusively for India. Even among beta testers, only a few can see the feature. Users have been complaining about problems with linking their bank accounts to UPI, which is to be expected considering the beta status of the feature. This indicates the final stage of inclusion of WhatsApp payments system on the Android app will be soon launched.

Apart from this, the Facebook-owned messaging application is also reportedly working on a group video calling feature. This will allow users to post stickers suiting their moods instead of only emojis.
