Authorities: Suspect among 5 dead in Kentucky shooting spree

Paintsville 911 received a call about a shooting on McKenzie Branch around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The deceased gunman was identified as Joseph Nickell, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. The sheriff's office, Kentucky State Police and Paintsville police searched for the suspect together and notified neighboring counties to be on the lookout for Nickell who was considered armed and risky.

Deputies said two additional victims and the suspect were found dead inside an apartment.

The identities of the victims are being withheld until their family members can be notified, and Price urged people to give them their space.

In a Facebook post, Johnson County Sheriff Dwayne Price described the events as "a horrific murder spree".

Five people are dead after what deputies are calling a "horrific murder spree".

Police found a man and a woman shot dead in the kitchen area of the house, and a witness said the suspect, identified as Joseph Nickell, fled in a black Toyota Camry.

A search of that building led to gruesome discovery of three more bodies, including Nickell, who is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sheriff Price concluded by saying, "In respect, for the victims, we are not releasing any names pending notification of families". I have worked in law enforcement for 34 years. A message left for Price and Kentucky State Police, who are involved in the investigation, weren't immediately returned Sunday. "This is one of the most disturbing acts of violence I have ever seen".

The Daily Independent will provide more information as it becomes available.
