Facebook shares rise; report predicts fewer younger Facebook users in 2018

Breaking it down further, the report suggests Facebook users aged 11 and under will fall by 9.3%, those aged between 12-17 will decline 5.6%, while 18-24 year-old users, will drop by 5.8%. Eighty-nine percent were using Snapchat, up from 29 percent four years ago.

A report by eMarketer said Snapchat is drawing youths away from Facebook at a quicker clip than Facebook-owned Instagram.

Despite its problems with young people, overall, Facebook is expected to reach 86.2 per cent of social network users in 2018 - way ahead of 49.9 per cent for Instagram, 42.7 per cent for Snapchat, and 33.5 per cent for Twitter. "This latest forecast indicates that it is more than just a theory". However, leading the charge for younger audiences is Snapchat.

The number of teens and young adults in the United Kingdom using Facebook is falling, as young people opt for Snapchat and the social network's own Instagram platform instead.

Young people are turning their backs on Facebook, according to a new report.

Meanwhile, more over-55s are signing up, with half a million new users expected to join by the end of the year.

The report is the latest to highlight Facebook's problem with attracting and keeping young people, who have always been a core user base for the world's biggest social network. There will be 6.4 million 55- to 65-year-old-plus regular Facebook users this year, the biggest demographic save for 16- to 34-year-olds. "One is that older people tend to be late to the internet party, but adoption tends to find its way through the demographics eventually".

Facebook shares closed higher Friday.

Last month, Facebook revealed a $4.3bn profit for the final quarter of last year, a 61% year-on-year rise.

Users are increasingly moving to Snapchat, where it is predicted that 43% of British teenagers will log in over the course of 2018 - more than double the numbers in 2015.

The report said Snapchat will add 1.9 million users under 25 in 2018 and Instagram will add 1.6 million.
