Karan Nagar gunfight: CRPF soldier killed

Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing series of attacks on security establishments both along the Line of Control and the International Border as well as in the interior regions.

According to news agency ANI, two armed terrorists were spotted outside CRPF camp in Srinagar's Karan Nagar area around 4:30 am on Monday.

Official sources said that an alert sentry noticed a group of militants approaching towards the camp at Karan Nagar in the city under the cover of darkness this morning. "He fired, forcing them to flee from the bylanes", the CRPF spokesperson said.

The militants fled from the spot and took shelter in an under-construction house nearby, the officials said. Militants are believed to be holed up in one of the buildings in the area. The CRPF then cordoned off the area, after which there was an intermittent exchange of fire.

So far nine people including five army men, a civilian and three Jaish militants have been killed while 10 others including two army officers injured in the gunfight.

"They couldn't enter the headquarters but sneak in a building close to the HQ". Suspecting they could be militants, the soldiers challenged them. "The firing has now stopped", he said.

Earlier, Ravideep Shahi, the Inspector General of CRPF, told India Today, "Our alert sentry foiled an attempt by two militants. we have called our quick reaction team and a team from Jammu Kashmir police are on task near the camp periphery".
