NBC reportedly benches analyst for remarks about Japan and Korea

The network was left red-faced by the comments of former journalist Joshua Cooper Ramo, who worked as a commentator during coverage of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

Japan was "a country which occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945", Ramo said, correctly, though he did not mention that historians say the Japanese army forced tens of thousands of Koreans into sex slavery.

Following that comment, which Koreans found ignorant considering that a very large percentage of them do not see Japanese colonialism in a positive light, NBC Sports apologized for Ramo's remarks.

Ramo pointed out that Japan occupied Korea from 1910 to 1945, following it up with, "but every Korean will tell you that Japan as a cultural and technological and economic example has been so important to their own transformation".

NBC, a unit of Comcast Corp, is the exclusive US broadcaster of the Olympics and is producing more than 2,400 hours of coverage over 18 days from Pyeongchang.

NBC has issued an apology after the network's "Asian analyst" for the Winter Olympics made an insensitive comment in regards to how Koreans should view Japan.

NBC issued an apology a few hours later.

The network had no real explanation for the insane comment other than to say sorry. Ramo himself has yet to apologize for his remarks.

US broadcaster NBC apologized to South Korea's winter Games organizing committee on Sunday after a commentator offended locals during coverage of the opening ceremony by straying into the sensitive issue of Japan-South Korean relations. "We understand the Korean people were insulted by these comments", an anchor said during a Saturday broadcast, according to MSN.

Japan's occupation of Korea remains a contested subject in the relationship between the two nations. Just last month, Mr. Abe's attendance at the Games was in question after tensions escalated over Japan's refusal to reissue an apology for the Japanese military's role in forcing Korean and other women to work in military brothels during World War II.
