Snowboarding: Kim dominant in halfpipe qualifying, Japanese disappoint

Even though his daughter is considered the top freestyle snowboarder in the world, Kim Jong-jin, father of United States athlete Chloe Kim, said Monday that watching his daughter's performance at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics was nerve-wracking.

Monday's primetime coverage begins at 7 p.m., and is expected to feature snowboarding phenom 17-year-old Chloe Kim leading the way in the women's halfpipe final.

A debut which went pretty well.

Kim might not have the support of a boyfriend cheering her on as she competes in her very first Olympics, but her parents and her family, many of whom live in South Korea, are her biggest fans.

When she was just 13, the Californian was too young for the 2014 Sochi Games, but four years later, the multiple X Games, World Snowboard Tour and Winter Youth Olympics victor is considered a big contender in the women's halfpipe. Although the two were together for quite some time, Kim decided that it was best to end their relationship because it was causing her some unnecessary stress ahead of her trip to PyeongChang, South Korea. For that, she was off to get some ice cream.

"I've been really trying to clean up all the little details and I think I just did that, so I'm really excited", she said".

Or perhaps cookie and cream. He recognized her skill - she went on to win junior nationals a year later - and told her mom that if she was looking for a program, she would be welcome at Mammoth. The 13-year-old Kim won silver in the X Games and had the scores to qualify for Sochi had she been old enough. Now four others have, including their American teammates Arielle Gold and Maddie Mastro. "Now I can really focus on what I want to do".

Kim, the Korean-American who has become the poster child for Pyeongchang 2018, looked superior to the rest of the field during both runs of qualifying. "I feel like that would have been too much for me at 13", Kim said.

That love of snowboarding has been what's allowed her to progress, Kim said. "I'm so thankful that the condition has been unbelievable".

And now the daughter of immigrants will attempt to write her name in Olympic history.

The women's half-pipe will start on Tuesday, and Jong-jin said he will be there along with his family.
