The ceremony will also be attended by a senior delegation of North Korean officials, including the younger sister of leader Kim Jong Un and the North's nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over an extravagant military parade in Pyongyang's Kim Il Sung Square on Thursday, grabbing the spotlight on the eve of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea to thumb his nose at Washington while making a point of showing off his new-found restraint toward Seoul.

It turns out, the two impersonators were dressed as President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un.

Undoubtedly North Korea's vision of a reintegrated peninsula is one under the socialist regime of Kim Jong-Un, while South Korea sees itself as the obvious dominant partner in any potential rejoining.

The games have not reduced the USA -led global pressure on North Korea to give up its nuclear and long-range missile program that is threatening America and the world.

"I thought she was really pretty", said Moon Jin-young, a 19-year-old student. His approval ratings, while still high at 63 per cent, fell after he pushed for a unified women's ice hockey team for the two Koreas.

In 2012, Kim donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Salesian of Don Bosco to help support the missionary brothers in South Sudan and to establish Catholic Schools throughout the war-torn country, meeting with Salesian brothers in Seoul to personally deliver the gift.

Kim Yo Jong is the first member of the ruling Kim family bearing the bloodline of the sacred Mount Paektu, a centrepiece of the North's idolization and propaganda campaign, to cross the border into the South since the 1950-53 Korean War. They noted that the plane had been given the flight number 615 - a reference to June 15, the final day of the first inter-Korean summit in 2000. "After this event, I hope that many South Korean people can understand North Korea better".

Pence said Moon updated him about the meeting he had with North Korean officials and "both of us reiterated to each other tonight that we will continue to stand strong and work in a coordinated way to bring maximum economic and diplomatic pressure to bear on North Korea". In looks-obsessed South Korea, many 20-something women list plastic surgery and brand-name bags as life goals. The two Koreas have been divided since the conflict ended in a ceasefire in 1953, and the democratic South has risen to become the world's 11th-largest economy, while the North has stagnated under the Kim family's rule.

Vice President Pence is using his appearance at the Winter Olympics to call on the global community to take a tougher stance on North Korea's nuclear program and human rights abuses. He also said the ceremonies were not the appropriate venue for serious talks. It has only deepened over the years as the North closes in on the ability to field an arsenal of nukes that can hit US cities. The team posed for a group photo, shouting "We are one!" which also happens to be the title of a North Korean song promoting reunification across the peninsula.

What did seem clear was that, deliberately or not, the North Korean government had managed to edge its way onto center stage during the South's biggest global moment in years.

"There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile program", Vice President Mike Pence told reporters after a short visit here. Reviving inter-Korean dialogue is critical for the policies of Moon, who insists that Seoul should be in control in global efforts to deal with the North Korean nuclear issue.

He continued (in an accent that did not sound particularly North Korean): "So let's start talking and stop with all the missiles and everything else".
