Canada, US prepare for Olympic women's ice hockey quarterfinals

Defending champion Canada beat 2010 Vancouver bronze victor Finland 4-1, while the three-time Olympic silver medalist Americans showed no mercy to the Olympic Athletes from Russia (OAR) with a 5-0 victory.

Canada had two goals waived off due to a kicking motion in the final frame, and a crease violation in the opening period. On Tuesday, Canada came away with an impressive 4-1 win over Finland, the same nation that defeated Canada 4-3 in the preliminary round of the 2017 Women's World Hockey Championship in Plymouth, Michigan.

Shannon Szabados is as familiar with that Canadian attack so the Edmonton native was hardly surprised at what that prolific offence did to Raty and the Finns in another decisive win for the four-time defending champions.

That means both teams get a spot directly in the tournament semi-finals and three days off before their next games while Finland, the Olympic Athletes from Russia, Switzerland and Sweden battle it out in the quarter-final round.

Team Canada's start could not have been any better.

Melodie Daoust celebrates with her Canadian teammates after scoring a goal in the second period against Finland. The U.S. defeated the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation 5-0 in the late game on Tuesday, securing semi-final berths for both Canada and the U.S.

The rookies, centered by Okanagan Hockey Academy alumna Emily Clark, came out with a burst of energy which was followed by a goal off the stick of Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont./Hockey Canada) 35 seconds into the game. The Finns, who lost 3-1 to the U.S.in its opener, are two-time bronze medallists.

The Americans, however, could not complete the comeback with the game ending in a wild pile-up around the Canadian net. The Canadians also had two goals disallowed earlier in a game that showed just how far these two teams are above the rest of the field - and how much they want to beat each other.

Captain Marie-Philip Poulin put Canada up 2-0 late in the first when she roofed a backhand that exited the net so quickly officials missed it and play carried on.

The Canadian players have been so schooled to say next to nothing bolder than the one-game-at-a-time drivel that it's tough to get a read on how confident they are.

"I think it let everybody see on our team where we are at and what we can do".

"She played outstanding for us", Schuler said.
