Ex-ICE Attorney Charged With Stealing Immigrant IDs

Ex-ICE Attorney Charged With Stealing Immigrant IDs

Sanchez was charged with wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, according to a court document filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington on Monday.

The chief counsel for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Seattle has been charged with stealing the identities of multiple immigrants over a four-year span, according to charging documents obtained by ABC News on Wednesday.

Neither an attorney for Sanchez nor the Department of Justice had a comment immediately.

Prosecutors with the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section allege that Sanchez stole the identities of seven people "in various stages of immigration proceedings" to defraud credit card companies including American Express, Bank of America and Capital One.

The document, known as an information, offers few details about Sanchez's alleged offenses. The victim was identified only as R.H. In one case, Sanchez sent an energy bill, Chinese passport and USA permanent resident card from his ICE email account to a personal Yahoo email account.

Property records list Raphael A. Sanchez as the owner of the address cited in the information.

Prosecutors use a felony information document in cases where the defendant waives his right to an indictment.

Sanchez' attorney, Cassandra Stamm, said she is not commenting until after her client appears in court on Thursday.

In addition to the filing on Monday, Sanchez also resigned from his post at the agency effective the same day, the Associated Press reported.

ICE agents in Washingon have played an active role in President Trump's immigration crackdown. That includes participation in "Operation Safe City", an effort in September to make arrests in "sanctuary cities" that have a policy against cooperating with ICE.
