Police investigating 'incident' at Houses of Parliament

Police investigating 'incident' at Houses of Parliament

London police were investigating a "suspicious package" Tuesday after a letter containing white powder was sent to an office in the Palace of Westminster, authorities said.

The package containing the powder was delivered to the office just after 11:30 a.m., police said.

The police said the powder was contained in a letter which was assessed by specialists and found not to be noxious. "The office remains closed at this time, but the rest of the Palace of Westminster is open", police stated.

Scotland Yard said its Counter Terrorism Command is investigating.

But despite armed police dealing with the incident in a basement under the ministerial corridor, the incident did not create a larger emergency on the Parliamentary estate.

One unnamed officer in Speaker's Court told the Press Association that specialist colleagues were examining a package left in the Palace of Westminster.

A House of Commons spokesperson earlier said an investigation is under way, with a heavy presence of police forming in the corridors.

A message was put out on the annunciators which are shown on TV screens around Parliament, perusing: 'Episode in the House of Commons being managed by the Metropolitan Police, don't be frightened'.

Parliament is now in recess, meaning that many MPs will not be in Westminster.

No extra officers were visible at the main entrance at Carriage Gates.
