Qatar Open: Caroline Wozniacki through to semis, but Simona Halep pulls out

World number two Simona Halep won on her return to competitive action since losing the Australian Open final, beating Ekaterina Makarova in straight sets in the Qatar Open Wednesday.

The World No 2 won 6-4, 6-3, hit 29 winners and needed four match points before overcoming her Latvian opponent, who is ranked 15th in the world.

Though the umpire disagreed with her claims, Wozniacki continued to lambast her opponent after the match in Doha.

Wozniacki was so upset about the sounds coming from the other side of the net that she complained to French umpire Emmanuel Joseph.

But Wozniacki carried on the great form which saw her lift her first Grand Slam title last month, not giving Witthoeft a chance, and hitting 18 winners."I felt very comfortable out there today", she said.

She then mimicked the grunts.

Wozniacki, however, was not done with her criticism of Niculescu.

'I didn't want to get in her head.

She also told Danish TV that her opponent had used "unfair methods".

"So I knew that if I keep concentrated and fighting, it could turn around".

According to some of those covering the event however, Wozniacki's complaints won't sit well with a locker room that holds Niculescu and her conduct in high regard.

Asked if she thought her opponent was grunting deliberately, Wozniacki responded: "I think that she didn't do it in the second set, so".

Her victory also ensured that for the fifth consecutive year, the Qatar title will not be retained by the defending champion.

She was beaten by American qualifier Catherine Bellis, 6-7 (4/7, ) 3-6, the first time the teenager has beaten someone in the top five.

"I am surprised that I could play three matches and to win them", said Halep in the late-night press conference.

A resurgent Petra Kvitova beat world No. 3 Elina Svitolina 6-4, 7-5 to set up a quarter-final clash with another top-10 player, Germany's Julia Goerges.

Garbine Muguruza, the world No. 4, breezed through beating Sorana Cirstea 6-0, 6-4 and was due to play France's Caroline Garcia.
