23 more flu deaths reported in SC

Officials say this is the deadliest flu season since the 2009 swine flu pandemic.

The majority (55%) of hospital admissions were due to the influenza B strain.

The numbers are among figures that show a big rise in new cases province-wide the last month. A total of 1,143 confirmed cases were reported previously.

Almost 2,000 patients have been hospitalized so far this season.

DHEC says there were about 10,600 positive flu tests last week in SC. Also, even if the flu vaccine is not always accurate to each season's flu strain, getting the vaccine every year can beneficial in future flu seasons, helping to build immunity to different strains each year.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services says 27 more people died last week bringing the total deaths so far this season to 200.

While the flu shot doesn't always prevent the flu, it can minimize the symptoms and help folks recover more quickly. Type A virus was more prevalent in the early part of the season.
