Hyundai Santa Fe Sports More Tech, Diesel Power

Aiming to grab a bigger piece of the exploding CUV and SUV market, Korean automaker Hyundai unveils its bigger, more aggressively styled '19 Santa Fe CUV at the Hyundai Motorstudio in Goyang to worldwide press. The company even claims an improvement on fuel economy by more than three percent. As we saw when Hyundai released images of the SUV earlier this month, the Santa Fe gets a stacked assortment of headlights and running lights - a motif that echoes other recent introductions by the automaker, like the Kona and Nexo SUVs.

The Santa Fe features a gently sloping roof replete with a panoramic sunroof, roof rails and an integrated rear spoiler. Headroom has also been improved by 22mm for those in the third-row seats. Hyundai will likely show off the American-market 2019 Santa Fe at the NY auto show in late March. The rear quarter glass is 41% larger than before and is claimed to improve rear visibility and third row comfort.

Note that Hyundai's photos show Korean versions of the Santa Fe, not the Santa Fe XL. The rear features a raked windshield and wraparound tail lights. This includes Rear Occupant Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Speed Limit Info Function, Safety Exit Assist which temporarily locks the doors when a vehicle is detected approaching from behind. It also includes a Safety Exit Assist created to stop you opening the doors if something is approaching from behind.

The crossover will be available with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive with electronic control HTRAC, which were first adopted on sedans premium subbrand Genesis. Just how much torque is shuffled around depends on the driving mode. In slippery conditions the system automatically distributes power to all four wheels automatically. Those wanting a little more can opt for a 232 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter, while diesel fans can snag a new 2.2-liter turbo-diesel with 200 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. All engines come mated to a Hyundai-developed, eight-speed automatic. Extra sound deadening has been placed in the floor to reduce the amount of road noise leaking into the cabin. An optional self-leveliser, as Hyundai calls it, adjusts the dampers to keep the ride height uniform regardless of load. As with all new Hyundais the fourth-generation Santa Fe has undergone local Australian testing and suspension tuning. And the infotainment system offers smartphone mirroring and wireless charging.

Pricing and New Zealand specifications haven't been finalised yet, but a launch in the second half of the year seems likely.
