United Nations to vote on 30-day humanitarian ceasefire in Syria

United Nations to vote on 30-day humanitarian ceasefire in Syria

Why this matters: The increasing death toll and heavy casualties in the eastern Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus, led many Council members and global aid groups to push for a quick vote.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) expressed on Thursday its "deep concern" over the escalating violence and the worsening humanitarian situation in the eastern region of Ghouta in Syria.

Besides Assad, Mrs Merkel said "Iran and Russian Federation have a particular responsibility" as they are both supporting the government forces.

However, the resolution does not yet have the backing of Russian Federation, which has called it "unrealistic".

The civilians of the war-ravaged town of Ghouta in Eastern Syria are pleading for global attention after the pro-government forces backed by Russian Federation, pounded the city in a relentless offensive that reportedly killed more than 250 people in the past 48 hours, according to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The resolution that we are suggested to adopt.we are ready to consider this proposal", Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group in England said 400 people, including dozens of children, had also been killed since then. "We want the world to stop this crime against civilians in eastern Ghouta", a doctor from one of the targeted hospitals told ITV News.

Previous concessions to Russia: Council members agreed to change an earlier version of the text last week to allow fighting to continue against the "Islamic State" and al-Qaida.

Meanwhile, Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said that a 30-day ceasefire is unrealistic and hard to enforce.

Robert Mardini, Middle East regional director for the International Committee of the Red Cross, said the charity was poised to offer emergency medical care in the enclave and carry out evacuations of wounded as soon as conditions permitted.

Forces loyal to Bashar al-Assad have been besieging nearly 400,000 civilians trapped inside Eastern Ghouta for years, but the siege has tightened this year and attacks on the enclave have intensified. Several medical facilities in Eastern Ghouta were reported to have been struck on Monday, the CNN report said.
