A newly-wed man was killed and his wife critically injured after a wedding gift exploded as they were unwrapping it at their home in Odisha's Bolangir district on Friday afternoon, PTI reported.

Bolangir Chief District Medical Officer S Mishra said the elderly woman who was the grandmother of the groom was declared "brought dead" at the Bolangir district headquarters hospital.

The man's wife, who was also present at that time, sustained critical injuries.

"The impact of the explosion was such that the kitchen in which it was opened destroyed completely beyond recognition".

" We suspect it was covered with gelatin tightly bound with twine", he said.

The motive for the attack is not clear, police said, however they suspect it was carried out by someone in the area.

Soumya's father, a college teacher, was away in Delhi when the incident occurred. His mother, a lecturer at a local college, was at work.

They are probing if Soumya had any enemies in Bengaluru, or if "anyone held a grudge against the couple marrying each other".
