Britons urged to avoid unnecessary travel as Storm Emma rolls in

Britons urged to avoid unnecessary travel as Storm Emma rolls in

"Nothing works when it snows in England", said Kevin Hodge, 37, a London-based accountant who had to take a cab to work Wednesday morning because of the severe delays on the subway lines.

The chief forecaster said a weather system is expected to move slowly north through Thursday, initially affecting the south of the warning area before intensifying and pushing north across the rest of the area later on.

In addition to the red warning areas, lesser Met Office warnings for snow are covering many other parts of Scotland.

All schools across the county today are closed and bin collections have been cancelled.

Cumbria Police said it was dealing with "multiple collisions", including a jack-knifed lorry, and advised motorists to travel at 20 miles per hour, as Northumbria Police advised lorries travelling on the A1 to pull over.

Schools in Florence were ordered to shut, while heavy goods vehicles were banned from the roads in the north.

Police are warning against travel today as the Met Office issues a Red (extreme) weather warning for parts of the South West.

The Scotland warningcomes as hundreds of schools were closed and there was significant disruption on the road and rail network.

The red weather warning means that extreme conditions are expected and immediate action should be taken, with many workers across the county sent home this afternoon.

In Scotland, there were widespread road closures and no trains running on the two main lines to and from England.

Major airports including London Gatwick and Heathrow told passengers that cancellations loomed, while Glasgow Airport announced it was closed until 3pm.

The SPFL announced that Wednesday night's games in the Ladbrokes Premiership - Celtic v Dundee, Hibernian v Hamilton Academical, Motherwell v Aberdeen - have been postponed.

The Met Office has warned parts of the country may find themselves under two feet of snow by Saturday as the forecaster predicts even more snow showers throughout the weekend. Some communities could become cut off for several days.

Both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports are open for "business as usual" on Saturday, but some delays and cancellations still remain as weather disrupts travel across Europe.

While policies differ across insureds and there will be case-to-case considerations, essentially the answer to that question should be a "yes" - as one insurer strongly clarified following speculation related to the red weather warning.

Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow and Meath are also covered by a red warning, which was issued early on Wednesday morning.

The Met Office warned of blizzards, loss of electricity and mobile phone signals, damage to trees and "severe snow drifting" ahead of Storm Emma's arrival from the Atlantic.
