New three-seat McLaren set to beat F1's top speed

New three-seat McLaren set to beat F1's top speed

McLaren's current line-up of supercars certainly isn't shabby, but aficionados of the automaker have a special spot in their heart for the McLaren F1. That means that the BP23 will also manage to top the iconic McLaren F1 road vehicle.

Now codenamed BP23, the new model will sit alongside the Senna in the McLaren range, but unlike that auto it'll be powered by a petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain. That's something McLaren has done before with the P1, its limited run of 375 hybrids that were produced between 2013 and 2015, and which sold for $1.35m apiece.

Power will likely come from the familiar twin-turbo V8 paired with a stout electric hybrid drivetrain.

What we do know is that it'll be fast - very fast indeed. It's said to be capable of exceeding 243mph, which is faster than the once record-breaking McLaren F1 of the nineties. Final performance numbers will, again, be shared closer to launch.

McLaren is describing the BP23 as a "hyper-GT" vehicle, suggesting it will have some grand touring ability while also showcasing the outright performance we've come to expect from today's hypercars. That's fitting for the latest addition to the McLaren Ultimate Series, but there's one specific cabin detail which we're particularly enthusiastic about.

At the announcement of the project, McLaren Automotive's chief executive Mike Flewitt said: "BP23 will borrow the three seat layout with the central driving position made famous by the iconic McLaren F1, and it will be housed in a streamlined, shrink-wrapped carbon-fibre body of great elegance". Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2019, with all examples to be tailor made via the McLaren Special Operations division for added exclusivity.

That's the fact that the new Hyper-GT will be a three-seater. No point getting out your credit card, though. The BP23's entire production run of 106 cars has also been allocated - even before the auto was officially announced in November 2016 - at a price of £1.6m plus local taxes.
