California police officer killed, another wounded in shooting at apartment complex

The suspect, whose identity is unknown, fled the vehicle and ran into an apartment building, in which he barricaded himself. The shooting happened about 9 p.m. Friday in the 1400 block of Palomares Street, near Fernleaf Avenue, where officers responded to a report of a barricaded suspect at an apartment complex.

A standoff between police and an armed suspect that resulted in one officer's death and the wounding of another remains underway Saturday afternoon in Pomona, California, near Los Angeles, more than 15 hours after it began. Two officers were struck in the apparent shootout; one of them was shot in the head and was seen being carried to safety by his colleagues.

On Saturday morning, the chief said police were escorting the fallen officer's body from Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center to the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department shared their thoughts and prayers for a wounded officer on Twitter. The second officer is in serious condition after undergoing surgery. Bergner says the other officer was undergoing surgery but was expected to recover.

SWAT officers and crisis negotiators have been attempting to negotiate with the suspect to no avail.
