Donald Trump to meet Kim Jon-un in May, creating history

Donald Trump to meet Kim Jon-un in May, creating history

US President Donald Trump will not meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un unless Pyongyang takes concrete actions, the White House said yesterday.

The official media of North Korea on Saturday (March 10) said neither military pressure nor sanctions from the United States would work on the country, amid reports that Pyongyang and Washington could start a top-level dialogue soon. For one thing, the planned deployment of the Aegis Ashore land-based missile defense system was primarily created to respond to the military threat from North Korea.

Mr Trump stunned observers when he agreed to the summit following an invitation delivered by South Korean envoys. The two leaders are called on to share the latest information on the moves of the Kim Jong Un regime and a negotiating strategy.

"(The North Koreans) are saying the right things and we're going to listen to them at the table and we're going to see where this leads", the official said.

News that the president would accept a meeting never taken by a sitting USA president came from an unlikely source Thursday evening: a last-minute press statement by a South Korean official standing in the dark on the White House driveway. "Many have expressed concern that negotiations such as these begin form the bottom-up, that a face-to face meeting between leaders comes at the end of a process, not at the very beginning", our correspondent said.

"Let's not forget that the North Koreans did promise something", Sanders said, responding to a reporter's question about why Trump agreed to a meeting - unprecedented between leaders of the two nations - without preconditions. "They said so what, who cares!"

Sanders said the time and location of the summit have yet to be determined.

"Kim Jong-un talked about denuclearisation with the South Korean representatives, not just a freeze", Mr Trump said on Twitter last night.

"President Trump has been very clear from the beginning that he is not prepared to reward North Korea in exchange for talks", said the official.

"The leaders affirmed their strong intention to continue close trilateral coordination with South Korea to maintain pressure and enforce global sanctions until such point that North Korea takes tangible steps toward complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization", the White House said.

Without question, experts say, the North wants a peace treaty to end the technically still-active Korean War and drive all US troops from the Korean Peninsula, removing what it says is a hostile encirclement of its territory by Washington and Seoul.

Outstanding questions about any potential encounter included the pre-conditions for the meeting and how the USA would verify that North Korea had halted its nuclear weapons program before the two heads-of-state met.

Many officials painted a bleak picture of what the sudden change in direction by Trump meant.

Britain will keep up pressure on North Korea even as it welcomes progress towards talks between Mr Kim and Mr Trump, a spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May has said.

"What the North Koreans have promised to do is not to conduct nuclear and ballistic missile tests prior to and during these negotiations".

However, other presidents have lodged economic sanctions against North Korea, as Trump has.

"China will welcome the dialogue between the USA and North Korea, and resolutely support North Korea securing its due interests in the process of denuclearization". What were to be talks in 1989 between President George Bush and Gorbachev aboard a ship near Malta turned into the "seasick summit" when waves over 2 meters high forced the leaders to cancel some meetings. Reductions in sanctions and an increase in aid could be part of a plan to step down weapons production-although this is the framework of the nuclear agreement with Iran that Trump has lambasted. The North has also, according to the US, repeatedly cheated on past nuclear deals.

If the encounter materialises, it would be the first meeting between leaders of North Korea and the U.S. after nearly 70 years of confrontation that began with the Korean War (1950-53) and 25 years of failed negotiations and tensions due to Pyongyang's nuclear program.
