Google Assistant adds daily updates and push notifications for voice apps

Ever since its inception a year ago, Google has been adding a ton of new features to the Google Assistant.

Assistant will now also be able to show you information in a carousel like view within the Assistant panel. The features are rolling out now, and others will be live shortly. The code details how you'll create a new hotword and teach Google Assistant to recognise it. Google also notes that the original "Hey Google" and "OK Google" will still work, even if you add another option. For example, you can tell Assistant you want a daily update on cryptocurrency prices from CoinBase.

For example, Todoist, the project management app, comes with support for Actions, in regards to hyper-specific commands to the app like "Mark the first task under Project 'make your graduation film' as done'".

Like other audio content on an Android phone, actions using the media response API can be controlled from a phone's lock screen or notifications area. Voice commands can be used to pause or replay media, and a media player will appear on your phone. For visual content, Assistant now has a browse carousel. Starting today, thanks to a new feature for Actions called Custom Device Actions, device makers can extend the Assistant and add "native" functionality specific to their device. The feature allows an action to be made aware if you paid for premium content in an app. a The concent can subsequently be made available for you. Earlier, users would say something like, "Ok Google, turn on the oven", now they will be able to give more detailed commands like, "Ok Google, set the oven to convection and preheat to 350-degrees".

Developers can take advantage of most of these features right now. Now, Google's letting anyone with custom hardware build different commands that will make it easier to use their devices.

Of all the features, the ability to issue complex commands seems most promising, as it'll significantly increase the number of things Assistant-powered devices can do.
