Sherman also would be in a similar defense - San Francisco's defensive coordinator is Robert Saleh, who was a defensive quality control coach with the Seahawks from 2011-13 and has installed a scheme similar to that run by Pete Carroll in Seattle. I couldn't see Detroit being a fit for Sherman. The results show a fan base mostly willing to forgive and forget any past Sherman incidents, though a large portion would do so only if the price is right.

"I want to go to a contender", Sherman told KIRO-AM in Seattle on Friday.

He's a west coast guy, having grown up in Los Angeles. But recovery from Achilles injuries can often be troublesome and Sherman also had a cleanup surgery on his opposite ankle during the offseason. Achilles injuries are tough to recover from, and though there are examples of players coming back successfully, it's fair to wonder if Sherman can come close to returning to his once-dominant form.

Smith is slated to make over $8 million next season, but if the team cuts him, they will be freed from all of that money.

Sherman has had to battle some injuries in recent years, but when healthy, he is still one of the better cornerbacks in the league.

All things considered, it's hard to imagine Sherman not receiving a big contract from a team with more cap room than the Packers.

But it's hard not to be impressed with Gutekunst's approach to free agency so far.

But add in all the context, and Josina Anderson's report that the Lions reached out to Sherman and expressed preliminary interest is a bit of a head-scratcher.
