Sri Lanka must act swiftly to prosecute perpetrators - ICJ

The provocation for the current round of violence was the death of a Sinhalese-Buddhist youth allegedly at the hands of a group of Muslim men in an incident of road rage.

Army personnel and police constables patrolled outside mosques in Kandy where prayers were offered in open grounds in many places because mosques had been burnt or vandalised. They named the main suspect as Amith Weerasinghe, a Sinhalese known for anti-Muslim activism and outspoken social media posts.

Mobs also set fire to Muslim-owned businesses and attacked a mosque in the east of the country last week.

Nine of the damaged mosques were in the picturesque tea-growing Kandy district, a draw for worldwide tourists now suffering widespread cancellations.

"Particularly for attacks against the minority Muslim community in Kandy district, while avoiding the abusive practices of the past", said the ICJ in a statement. "At the same time, the authorities are folding their arms and watching", said Muslim businessman M Jaffer, as quoted in Thursday's DailyFT newspaper.

Sri Lanka: Police probing foreign-funding angle in communal clashes

Hundreds of Buddhist monks and activists staged a demonstration in the Sri Lankan capital Friday to condemn anti-Muslim riots that have killed three people and forced the government to declare a nationwide state of emergency. Troops guarded mosques in the city while extra deployments were made to strengthen security and maintain peace.

Internet services, which were blocked across Kandy, were restored on Friday, but access to social media sites, such as Facebook, remained blocked across Sri Lanka.

Army chief Mahesh Senanayake visited Kandy on Thursday and promised an increased military presence near mosques. Most Muslim-owned businesses in the country remained shut as troops remained on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents after Friday prayers. There were no casualties. "We had 80% occupancy, but it has now dropped to about 30%", the operator of a deluxe hotel in the town of Kandy said on Friday, asking not to be named. If the government does not crush the Sinhala-Buddhist chauvinism that has led to the attacks on Muslims, it will turn against the Tamil minority sooner rather than later, resurrecting ghouls from the civil war. Sinhalese Buddhists make up 75% of the country's 21 million people, and 10% are Muslims.

Almost 75 percent of Sri Lankans belong to the majority Sinhalese community while Tamils make up another 13 percent.
