Amazon is Adding Alexa Calling to Android, iOS, and FireOS Tablets

When Amazon launched the Echo Show in May 2017, it introduced Alexa calling and messaging, a free-to-use feature that lets Amazon Echo owners and those with the Alexa app on their smartphone to make and receive calls and messages.

The basic idea is simple, and a little bit obvious in hindsight. If you have anything else to ask her, you can just ask it without needing to say her name first. "She didn't even say anything, just laughed". As usual, saying "stop", "cancel" or "go to sleep" will stop Alexa from listening. You can't, for instance, say "Alexa, turn off the lights and set the thermostat to 68". Just make sure you have the latest Alexa app installed, have it synced with your contacts and you can then ask Alexa to call or send messages to friends and family, or drop in with any Echo device you have in your contacts.

A representative of Amazon explained: "In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh.' We are changing that phrase to be 'Alexa, can you laugh?' which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance 'Alexa, laugh'". So, if you see the blue ring at the top of your device, you know Alexa is still listening. This follows a problem last week where Amazon Alexa stopped working altogether and wouldn't respond to voice commands at all and essentially lost her voice.

To enable Follow-up Mode on your Alexa device, open the Alexa app and head to the settings.

Amazon points out that Alexa won't register the follow-up command until the assistant is "confident" that the user is speaking to it. Obviously you can't make a video call to a regular Echo, but that should be obvious seeing as how it doesn't have a camera.
