Karti Chidambaram moves Delhi HC seeking bail

Karti Chidambaram, who was in CBI custody being investigated for alleged money laundering in the INX Media case, was sent to judicial custody until March 24 by a special Delhi court.

Karti Chidambaram was arrested in February for allegedly taking money to facilitate Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media in 2007 when his father was the Finance Minister in the United Progressive Alliance government.

The CBI Special Judge, Sunil Rana, denied the request for a separate cell and washroom, saying it would lead to Karti being "treated differently than other accused persons", quoted News18. Karti, a son of senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram, was arrested on February 28 by the CBI and has been in its custody since.

Dayan Krishnan's submissions were based on the ground that since Karti's father P Chidambaram was leading the Ministry of Home Affairs at some point, it is clear that he may have made some enemies.

On Friday, the CBI moved two more applications, seeking court permission to confront Karti Chidambaram with his Chartered Accountant S. Bhaskararaman, arrested last month.

There is an apprehension that there is grave threat to the safety and security of Karti in judicial custody and therefore, he should be lodged in separate prison.

"Only keeping in view the fact of social status of accused and his father, he can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in a separate prison", the court said.

"His father P Chidambaram has dealt with stringent penal laws including TADA and MCOCA, posing a huge security threat to Karti. They roam around freely", the CBI lawyer said, adding that there were enough security guards in jail so the "apprehension" was not justified. But he has asked jail officials to ensure security and also allowed Karti Chidambaram to take in his spectacles and medicines.

He was remanded in CBI custody for three days after the investigative agency claimed it had recovered some incriminating documents and CD from the Chennai office of Advantage Strategic Pvt Ltd., a company linked to him. P. Chidambaram also attended the court hearing, as he has done previously during other hearings.

"Since the bail application is already fixed for filing of reply/consideration on March 15, the present application is dismissed", the court said.

Currently, he has been sent to judicial custody till March 25 in the INX Media Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance case. It, however, later revised the figure to $1 million (about Rs 6.50 crore at the current exchange rate and Rs 4.50 crore in 2007).
