One person dead, one hurt after package explodes inside home

In Austin, Texas, a suspicious bomb package is reported to have killed a teen and injured a nearby woman, with police believing that a second, risky package could be nearby.

Austin police Chief Brian Manley said at a news conference Monday that the U.S. Postal Service does not have a record of delivering a package to the Austin home where the explosion occurred Monday. The two homes that received the packages belonged to African-Americans, the police said.

ABC affiliate KVUE reported that a male teenager who has not been publicly identified was reported dead on the scene and a woman in her 40s was transported to a nearby hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

He says that package was brought into the kitchen where it detonated, killing a 17-year-old boy and injuring the woman.

Officials said it's not believed the delivery came through any mail service, but was placed on the doorstep.

Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said that police, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and AT agents, were looking at both incidents as being related based on the similarities.

One occurred Monday morning and the other occurred March 2. The case has been compared to a similar incident that claimed another Austin man's life last week.

Police were called to the home in Austin at 6.45am following reports of the explosion.

Police warned the public about handling packages they are not expecting.

The incident marks the second such explosion this month at a home in Texas' capital city.

Police say their investigation of deadly package bombings at two Austin homes will try to determine if a hate crime was involved because the victims in both cases were black.

In both cases, the packages apparently were delivered overnight and found in the morning, Manley said.
