Roger Federer Remains Perfect in Paradise

World number 1 Roger Federer defeated Federico Delbonis 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) to advance to the third round at Indian Wells on Sunday.

"But, you know, after an opponent like this, to come back from two breaks down, actually, for me it was nearly impossible".

The match was tied 2-2 in the second set when it was halted Saturday.

'It felt like the first match I have ever played on the tour, very weird, ' he told reporters. After another 90-minute delay organizers suspended play for the night.

Federer needs to make the semi-finals to retain his number one ranking. The win extended his 2018 win streak to 13 matches.

While Federer was far from ideal, he did improve to an unblemished 13-0 on the year and took the next step in snaring his third title of the young season.

Novak Djokovic suffered a shock defeat by world number 109 Taro Daniel of Japan as he was knocked out of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. He returned for the Australian Open with a revamped, abbreviated service motion created to relieve pressure on the elbow and showed flashes of fine form before eventually losing in straight sets to Hyeon Chung in the fourth round.

Djokovic scrambled to win the second set on Sunday but the rust from the layoff was evident as he made 62 unforced errors compared to 29 for Daniel.

"I can't believe I beat someone like (Djokovic) on center court like this, it's pretty insane", Daniel said.

Israeli Dudi Sela beat British 21st-seeded Briton Kyle Edmund 6-4 6-4 while Luxemburg's 24th seed Giles Muller was upset by Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 7-5.

Federer won the Indian Wells championship for a fifth time a year ago, adding to his crowns in the Southern California desert in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2012.

After retiring during his quarterfinal match at Wimbledon last July, Djokovic did not play again for the rest of 2017 in an attempt to heal his right elbow problem without surgery.

This was the former US Open champion's sixth win in a row.

Novak Djokovic during his second round match against Taro Daniel. Djokovic had four aces but overall he served poorly making four double faults and winning just 65 percent of his first-serve points.

"To me, it's not that surprising", he said. "And even though you don't have pain, you are still thinking about it, because it has been something that I have been feeling and dragging for over two years", Djokovic said.

"I think I came out playing a little more aggressive than the other two sets and that made him keep making more mistakes". He's only going to get better from here.

Marin Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion who lost to Federer in the final of this year's Australian Open, eased to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Marton Fucsovics.
