Trump backs off call for raising minimum age to buy assault weapons

A mass shooting in Parkland, Florida last month has renewed a USA debate over gun control.

On Friday, Florida Republican Gov. Rick Scott - a long-time NRA member - signed a bill into law raising the minimum age for all gun purchase from 18 to 21.

The announcement of the commission comes less than a day after Trump criticized blue-ribbon committees at a rally in Pennsylvania, saying, "We can't just keep setting up blue-ribbon committees", adding that they do nothing but "talk, talk, talk".

The administration's plans include working with states to provide "rigorous" gun training for "specially qualified" teachers and staff, officials said.

White House plan released Sunday does not address the minimum age for gun purchases.

The president will encourage states to authorize "risk protection orders", which allow law enforcement to temporarily seize guns from people whom a court has determined to be unsafe.

Appearing on ABC's This Week on Sunday, White House principal deputy press secretary Raj Shah said Trump supports raising to 21 the age for purchasing "certain firearms".

Opting for a plan the administration officials described as "pragmatic", Trump backs legislation proposed in Congress aimed at providing more data for the background check system - a database of people who are not legally allowed to buy guns.

The Department of Justice has been asked to create programs helping schools to partner with state and local law enforcement authorities that can provide training in gun use by those who volunteer to do so.

The administration will encourage state attorneys general to audit school district compliance with state emergency preparedness, and help states and localities support public awareness campaign modeled on "See Something, Say Something" to encourage awareness and reporting of suspicious activity.

The administration is backing the "Fix NICS" bill introduced by Sen.

Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association (NEA), the largest professional union in the United States, has said that parents and educators "overwhelmingly reject the idea of arming school staff". John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen.

It will be up to the commission led by DeVos to study an assortment of other ideas, such as rating systems for violent entertainment, best practices for school buildings and security, and ideas for improving mental health services.

After the latter statement the president met privately with the NRA, whose leaders said he'd backed down.

Although the school safety commission has no timetable to produce recommendations, DeVos insists it's not simply a stalling tactic. The orders would allow law enforcement officers, with approval from a court, to remove firearms from those who pose a threat to themselves or others and temporarily to prevent individuals from purchasing new firearms.

Last, the administration wants to better integrate mental health, primary care and family services programs, and the president has ordered a full audit and review of the Federal Bureau of Investigation tip line, he said. The Justice Department has submitted a proposed regulation to the Office of Management and Budget for review to prohibit their sale by classifying them as machine guns under federal law.

But like the firearm training programs, officials were unable to explain how exactly the commission itself will enact reforms outside making recommendations to Congress, nor did they know if there was a timeline in which these changes would come to fruition.
