Death penalty for drug dealers? Count Trump in

Trump also has endorsed Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's approach to the issue; Duterte's "drug war" has led to the deaths of thousands of people by extrajudicial police killings.

In a wide-ranging speech Saturday night outside Pittsburgh, President Donald Trump touted his agenda and plugged supporters to vote for Republican state Rep. Rick Saccone in next week's special election in Pennsylvania's 18th District, telling voters he needs more GOP lawmakers in Congress to support his agenda. Its recent reliably red status had diminished the drama about local elections. The editorialists complimented Lamb as "an impressive young man", but warned that he could become part of a Democratic majority that would try to impeach Trump. The Congressional seat in question has been Republican-controlled for 15 years.

"They had state judges that are Democrats change your voting districts - what kind of stuff is that?"

While the telegenic young Lamb has impressed even Republicans with his disciplined campaign, and calculated splits with the national Democratic Party, Republicans have blasted Saccone for weak fundraising, an inability to tell his own story as a veteran, his deep hostility to unions in a union-heavy district, and past mistakes like telling a mother whose kid had died of opioid abuse that addiction was a "family responsibility" and it's not taxpayers' responsibility to help, a brutal remark in a district where opioids are a serious problem.

"The whole world, remember that, they're all watching", he said at his Saturday rally.

"Go out, vote for Rick".

Public and private polls from both parties have found a margin-of-error race with the wind behind Lamb, who was down a few points in multiple surveys late last month.

Saccone is now going up against Democrat Conor Lamb.

"Lo and behold, they're fighting for their lives here", Doyle told AFP, referring to Republicans. "I don't think we should play games".

Trump's fiery populism, which included pledges to curb immigration, reopen shuttered factories, and strengthen the military, helped win the White House.

"This should've been handled, by the way, over the last 30 years". In contrast, Lamb raised more than $3.3 million dollars. "It's an A-plus candidate, honestly, in Conor Lamb, versus an F candidate in Saccone and the campaign that has been run".

His army of volunteers has fanned out knocking on doors, pressing into areas once considered so conservative that a Democrat could have little hope of breaking through.

Against the wishes of his own party, Trump confirmed last week that he would enact tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum. Denny Cregut is a former steelworker who now works for the United Steelworkers Union. He can say, 'I love President Trump.' ...

As for Saccone, GOP operatives say his strategy is to appeal directly to Trump's base. "We've got two days left". He said the tariff might have had more of an impact if the announcement had come earlier, and workers could feel some of the benefits.

"We're not out trying to get rich". "I think it's a discussion we have to start thinking about don't you agree?"

Democrats could be forgiven for fretting about tomorrow's outcome.

Both candidates in the special election to fill the seat vacated by Tim Murphy, a Republican, back the president's decision on the import duties.

Democrats nonetheless take heart that those candidates performed better in their districts than Hillary Clinton did against Trump in 2016.

Some local Republicans suggested Democratic exuberance might be misplaced once again. He sometimes mocks his 33-year-old opponent as having "no record at all".
