Fiorentina honour Davide Astori with 1-0 win over Benevento

Before the match at the Artemio Franchi stadium, the two teams and fans observed a minute of silence in tribute to the Italy defender, age 31, who died on March 4 in his sleep from an apparent heart attack, reports Efe.

Sunday afternoon marked Fiorentina's first fixture since the tragic passing of their captain Davide Astori, as they took on Benevento at home.

Fittingly, Fiorentina went on to register a 1-0 victory, the only goal coming from Vitor Hugo, the 20-year-old Brazilian centre-back who came into the team to replace Astori.

The game was (symbolically) stopped in the 13th minute as everyone applauded in Astori's honour and with fans displaying a lovely choreography on the stands for their captain.

A banner in the curva read "Davide 13".

Vitor Hugo celebrated with a t shirt of Astori after scoring the only goal of the game.

The Viola captain and Italy global died in his sleep last Saturday, which led to an outpouring of grief from the football community.

Fiorentina could have added a second in stoppage time at the end of the second half as Milan Badelj hammered a shot from distance off the post, and Marco Benassi somehow blazed the rebound over the bar.
