National Football League free agency rumors: Vikings reach out to Drew Brees

So, it makes sense for the Vikings to look at an elite QB in Brees.

Momentum for a reunion between the Saints and TE Jimmy Graham is building, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo tweeted Monday morning, roughly a half-hour after teams and agents could officially start negotiating.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network said the Vikings reached out to representatives for several quarterbacks as the NFL free-agent negotiating window began Monday afternoon.

With each day Brees and the Saints do not agree on a new deal, the likelihood he winds up elsewhere increases. That means teams can reach out to Brees' agent - but not the player directly - to negotiate a contract.

Strief wasn't on the Saints' draft board until Walker insisted that he would be a 10-year player in the National Football League - and Strief has talked before about how much it meant to him to prove his coach right. If he remains unsigned, then $18 million in dead money from his old contract will immediately start counting against New Orleans' 2018 salary cap.

Strief said he felt "indebted" to Payton and Loomis for giving him the opportunity and never seriously considered leaving for any other teams when he had the chance - even before he married a New Orleans native.

An upgrade at quarterback could propel the Minnesota Vikings to the Super Bowl next season, and they appear to be examining all options.

The NFC South, in particular, has three legit championship contenders in the Saints (with Brees), Panthers, and obviously the Falcons. But Brees is much, much more than a quality starting quarterback - he's an elite, future Hall-of-Fame quarterback.

A pillar of the New Orleans Saints has made a decision to walk away.

METAIRIE, La. - Zach Strief operated in the shadows for most of his 12-year career with the New Orleans Saints.

What happens if the Vikes can't close the deal on either Cousins or Brees?
