Claire Foy made less money than Matt Smith on 'The Crown'

On Tuesday, producers revealed that Claire Foy was paid less for her role as Queen Elizabeth on The Crown than Matt Smith was paid for playing Prince Phillip, despite having more screen time. Olivia Colman (Golden Globe victor for AMC's The Night Manager) will take over for Foy as Queen Elizabeth, while the new Prince Philip has yet to be cast. The reasoning at the time, Mackie explained, boiled down to prominence: Matt Smith was an global figure due to his leading work on Doctor Who, while Foy was relatively unknown to viewers outside the constraints of the United Kingdom.

The show will not let it happen again, said Suzanne Mackie, creative director of the show's production company, Left Bank.

Mackie said that going forward, all actresses to tackle the royal role will take home a fatter paycheck, though it's too late for Foy, who has been recast, along with the rest of her co-stars, going into Season 3. "Broadchurch" alum Olivia Coleman will play the queen, and Smith's replacement has yet to be named.

Claire Foy appears in a scene from "The Crown". Foy received high praise for her portrayal of the restrained monarch, in which she nailed everything from the queen's posh accent to her physical poise. The success carried on into the second season, with Foy bringing home another SAG Award and earning another Golden Globe nomination. Helena Bonham Carter will replace Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, the queen's rebellious younger sister. One of those is rectifying an apparent pay gap between its male and female actors.

"Seasons three and four will be the test of whether the show really has the legs to survive", said producer Andy Harries, CEO of Left Bank Pictures.

The makers of the Netflix drama, speaking at a television conference in Jerusalem yesterday, claimed Smith was paid more because he was better known when the series was cast. USA Today reported that Williams earned just $80 a day, adding up to less than $1,000, while Wahlberg was paid $1.5 million total.
