Bali airport to shut for 24 hours to observe day of silence

To make compliance easier, Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia petitioned the Ministry of Communications and Information to disable phone and internet services to Bali.

It means there will be an nearly total 24-hour blackout - hospitals and vital services are exempt - for the annual celebration, which this year falls on March 17 in the tourist hotspot.

Bali's airport will be shuttered for 24 hours starting from 6am local time on Saturday (Mar 17) as locals observe a "day of silence".

"Let's rest a day, free from the internet to feel the calm of the mind", head of the Indonesian Hinduism Society in Denpasar, Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, said.

Nyepi is one of the most important days in the ancient Balinese calendar and marks the start of the Hindu New Year for the island.

Such spots included hospitals, banks, and certain public places will be be running, said Merza Fachys, president director of Smartfren, another service provider.

Apparently, Indonesia is one of the world's most connection nations; their government even shuts down the worldwide airport on the day of silence.

Religious and civil leaders, in the police and the military, made the request to the Indonesian government earlier in March.

This Saturday, the quiet will extend to internet on mobile devices. However what's interesting is that this will also be the first time that this unplugging of the internet has been agreed to, where a request was made past year but denied. Practitioners see it as a time for self reflection, with four restrictions being observed during this time - no fire, no travel, no activity and no entertainment.

The day after Nyepi is celebrated as New Year's Day.
