Federation Internationale de Football Association approves VAR use at World Cup 2018

Federation Internationale de Football Association approves VAR use at World Cup 2018

FIFA President Gianni Infantino speaks during a press conference after the FIFA Council Meeting, in Bogota, Colombia, Friday, March, 16, 2018.

"We've looked at the technology to be ready for the World Cup".

Infantino added that time-wastage had been discussed "passionately" but concluded: "It's not possible that in 2018 everyone in their living room knows a few seconds after the play whether a referee has made a mistake and the referee doesn't".

VAR promises greater accuracy through playbacks, which will guarantee the dutiful delivery of red cards, penalty awards, mistaken identities and goals.

However, there has been plenty of criticism of VAR, not least over the amount of time taken for referrals during matches, while there have been complaints over confusion caused for coaches and fans.

"What we want is to help and to give the referee the possibility to have extra help when he has to make important decisions, and in a World Cup we make very important decisions", added Infantino.

He said: "Nobody knows exactly how VAR will work".

La Liga has already confirmed that video review will be used in Spain next season, but UEFA said it will not roll out the system yet in the Champions League.

"I am not at all against it but we must better explain when it will be used". That's why we carried out trials in those 1,000 matches.

The technology was approved by football's lawmakers this month and despite some opposition it will have its official unveiling at the World Cup.

Federation Internationale de Football Association added that it can not "yet" agree to a request from the Iraqi authorities to organise matches in the capital of Baghdad, but Infantino promised that the city's application would continue to be studied.

The FIFA Council also decided that Peru will host the 2019 Under-17 World Cup with Poland staging the Under-20 tournament.
