Opening Day for Cubs, White Sox; Cubs' Happ homers on first pitch

MIAMI (AP) - A large contingent of Chicago Cubs fans crashed opening day in Miami, and one pitch into the major league season, Ian Happ had them on their feet to celebrate while Marlins fans stewed.

Happ tagged a 95 miles per hour fastball and sent it far over the right field fence.

The Cubs are in Florida for their first game of the season against the Miami Marlins and Rizzo was able to spend a few days back home in Parkland with his former baseball team.

After allowing the homer to Happ, Urena's first inning got worse when he allowed one run to score on a hit by pitch and another on a walk. Tomorrow, Cubs 1B and Stoneman Douglas alumnus Anthony Rizzo will "play host to four of the victims' families" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 3/29). Making his first Opening Day start, Urena needed 36 pitches to get out of a three-run first inning.

Of course, the early result can't be a huge shock. He was then traded to the New York Yankees, but the Cubs continued their ascent, winning the World Series in 2016 to end a 108-year drought. Urena tied for first with 14 hit batsmen last season.

Rizzo also invited the school's baseball team to the Cubs game at Marlins Park on Friday. Second baseman Yoan Moncada will bat leadoff for the Sox, followed by right fielder Avisail Garcia, first baseman Jose Abreu, designated hitter Matt Davidson, left fielder Nicky Delmonico, catcher Welington Castillo, shortstop Tim Anderson, third baseman Yolmer Sanchez and center fielder Adam Engel. The Marlins have since come back, though, scoring one in the bottom half of the first and three in the bottom of the third, thanks in large part to Kyle Schwarber playing some awful defense.
