Facebook's Zuckerberg grilled harder during second hearing

Facebook's Zuckerberg grilled harder during second hearing

On Tuesday afternoon, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg sat down before Congress to address the mounting concerns that have emerged in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, from user privacy to targeted ads.

An estimated 59 777 South Africans were also affected by the data breach.

The New Zealand Privacy Commissioner John Edwards refers to the incident as "the Cambridge Analytica data breach".

The FB head has been under fire since news broke that Cambridge Analytica had gained access to 50 million users. There are discrepancies when replies of CA and Facebook were matched. It will look for misuses of personal information and then alert users if it finds anything suspicious. These things have been happening for years, tech companies had been exploiting the loopholes in the law to make money from our personal data. If anything came from this, we see that Zuckerberg is just another reckless billionaire, playing with people's lives because he can afford to do it.

Facebook isn't planning on charging its users for the service just yet. Michigan Democrat Debbie Dingell also requested that data be provided about Facebook like buttons, share buttons, and code on sites other than Facebook that could potentially be used to collect data on non-users.

"The Cambridge Analytica scandal has simply exposed in a dramatic way what many people have been pointing out for many years - that this is Facebook's business model".

"Our contract with GSR stated that all data must be obtained legally, and this contract is now a matter of public record".

The reaction of Facebook's chairman and CEO - a middle-grade air of panic, a brief awkward silence and nervous laughter - made it clear he doesn't dwell as thoughtfully on universal privacy issues as much as he wants us to think he does.

"What is the standard that Facebook uses to determine what is offensive or controversial, and how's that standard been applied across Facebook's platform?" And in the past, Facebook has described various forms of data collection that don't involve users directly giving it to the social network.

Facebook does have a policy to remove or hide content they deem unsafe or hate speech.

The proliferation of so-called fake news has put Mr. Zuckerberg in an awkward spot, as the company promises to do a better job of weeding out propaganda and falsehoods but insists it can not police free speech.

Zuckerberg in his testimony in front of the United States lawmakers agreed that Facebook tracks internet users through hundreds of millions of web pages.

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) asked Zuckerberg about Russian interference on FB regarding the 2016 election and why some unverified, yet obvious Russian troll farm pages are still up, prompting Zuckerberg to say he and his team are working on verifying pages.

"We were encouraged by Facebook removing the posts after the hearing, but they need to be vigilant and program their AI (artificial intelligence technology) to prevent this from occurring in the future", said Thomas.
