Attorney General Andy Beshear said previously that if the governor signed this bill, he would sue to stop it.

State lawmakers tucked pension reform into another bill about sewage and passed that bill, late last month - a move that was heavily criticized by teachers.

The new law will drastically change teacher's pension plans leading to retirement.

New teachers hired after July 1 must be part of a 401K style, cash-hybrid balance plan.

"I respect the teachers who go into the classroom and teach the students, and I'm grateful to them because eight of those students happen to be my kids".

Wednesday, Fort Thomas Independent Schools sent out a letter to families to voice their concerns over the recently vetoed budget and revenue bills as well as the CERS phase in bill.

The revenue plan would impose a 6 percent sales tax on a variety of services like auto and home repairs while cutting the income tax rate for some individuals and businesses. Kentucky now has the highest smoking rate in the nation.

Bevin's administration has questioned the revenue projections, saying the new taxes would not pay for the spending that lawmakers approved, but would lead to at least a $50 million shortfall over the next two years.

With the pension reform bill being signed into law, an area superintendent says there are pros and cons to the legislation.

Bevin told Terry Meiners on 840 WHAS he signed Senate Bill 151 on Tuesday. CERS is the county employee retirement system, which is already established in the state, however, Senate Bill 362 would create a new section in the Kentucky retirement system.

Public education is not the only area affected by the vetoes. He said those bills were not fiscally responsible. Bevin called their leadership "absolute frauds". Shelton acknowledged Tuesday that "closing school may be necessary if they have too many staff absent, but that is a local decision".

By now you are most likely aware that the Governor has vetoed the CERS phase in bill (SB362), the budget bill (HB200) and the revenue bill (HB366) as well.

When asked about the teachers' day of action on Friday, the governor replied: "If we want to punish students by having their teachers walk out on them because they are instructed to do so by the KEA, the KEA doesn't know which side of this they're on". Without these budget measures, all school districts' funding will be devastated. "They're looking out for the best interest of themselves". They provide funding for the pension system, healthcare, transportation, SEEK, etc., as well as funding to help us renovate Johnson Elementary School. They also urged Bevin to veto the changes to the teachers' retirement system.

Barren County Schools will be in session on Friday, but Matthews says a delegation will be going to Frankfort on when the legislature is scheduled to meet again.

Lawmakers must now use the final days of the session to either override his veto or draft new bills he will sign.

He said he wanted to work with lawmakers "to make sure we come up with a smart, thoughtful, balanced approach to moving forward on both of those fronts".

"Where do we go from here?" Thanks for your advocacy and support!

There will also be a walk-in protest Friday morning at Graves County Schools.

In a message to teachers, KEA President Stephanie Winkler asked "each school district or citizen that can legally be in Frankfort, to be there" on Friday.
