Rare reveals what's on the horizon for Sea of Thieves

The first of these content updates is called "The Hungering Deep", and it will be released in May.

Alongside regular content updates, Sea of Thieves players can expect weekly events featuring various goals and new mechanics.

"We've been listening closely to our community, and we know how keen they are to hear how we plan to grow Sea of Thieves", said Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate. Both updates will feature new gameplay mechanics, AI threats, and rewards.

The best part about it is that all of the updates will be free for Sea of Thieves owners. The event will also serve as the springboard for weekly events during the month of May. The Hungering Deep will be a permanent fixture in the game, with new mechanics and rewards, but will kick off with a timed event that Rare plans to start teasing soon. Another one is skeleton thrones scattered around the world for players to find.

Sea of Thieves biggest problem at the moment is a lack of content.

Rare also promises general updates to keep the sailing smooth and the piracy appropriately perilous, and until the new content updates it will be focused on enriching the world, adding new ways to play and to have fun with your crew. Expanding the number of ships from the current solo, two-man, and four-man options have been requested frequently from the community since the days of the beta.

Check out the new episode of Rare's "Inn-Side Story" above for additional details.

Looking further down the line, this summer will see a couple of updates with the Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores updates.

Content updates will add major new features alongside new items & mechanics, with new goals and rewards.

The Hungering Deep is due in May and will add "a new AI threat" to the game world. The only hint at what it might be is describing the new content as "more fantastical". I think Rare is on the right track with its plans, which also include "three more major updates" during fall and winter. Unfortunately, Rare was even more secretive with these as it did not reveal even the names.
