READ: President Trump announces strikes in Syria

British jets struck "a former missile base. where the regime is assessed to keep chemical weapon precursors", the country's Defence Ministry said, while France said the military action was aimed at "the secret chemical arsenal of the Syrian regime".

According to reports from AP, loud explosions are lighting up skies Friday over the Syrian capital just after the announcement was made. "They are crimes of a monster instead".

They targeted a scientific research facility in the Damascus area, a chemical weapons storage facility west of the city of Homs and a third location that contained both a command post and a chemical weapons equipment storage facility in the same area, the U.S. military said.

Russia's ambassador to Lebanon said any missiles fired at Syria would be shot down and the launching sites targeted - signalling a potential major confrontation.

"Did a chemical weapons attack happen?"

"It is Russian Federation alone that had agreed to be the guarantor of the removal of all chemical weapons in Syria".

The participation of British and French forces enables Trump to assert a wider global commitment against the use of chemical weapons, but the multi-pronged attack carries the risk of Russian retaliation.

Russian Federation is likely to call for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss US, British and French air strikes on Syria, one of its lawmakers says.

The Damascus sky lights up missile fire as the US launches an attack on Syria targeting different parts of the capital early Saturday, April 14, 2018.

He told Sky News: "If there is proof the regime did it, then the regime must be held responsible".

Since last years strike, multiple chemical attacks have been reported in opposition areas, a lot of them involving chlorine rather than the nerve agent sarin, as was used in 2017, suggesting the government may have adjusted its tactics. He added he would have liked to have seen the US help years ago. "We are not ruling out sarin right now", Mattis said.

Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until Assad's government stopped its use of chemical weapons.

The strikes appear to signal Trump's willingness to draw the United States more deeply into the Syrian conflict.

Global chemical weapons experts were travelling to Syria to investigate an alleged gas attack by government forces on the town of Douma which killed dozens of people.

Mattis acknowledged that the United States waged the attacks only with conclusive evidence that chlorine gas was used in the April 7 attack in Syria. Both the Russian military and the Syrian government said they would facilitate the mission and ensure the inspectors' security.

In strong words directed at the countries supporting Syria, Mr Trump said they would be judged by the friends that they kept.

The presence of Russian troops and air defenses in Syria were among numerous complications weighing on Trump, who must also consider the dangers to roughly 2,000 American troops in the country if Russia were to retaliate for US strikes.

Mattis said he was not aware of any USA losses, and added, "Right now we have no additional attacks planned".

Similarly, French President Emmanuel Macron said that "We cannot tolerate the trivialization of the use of chemical weapons, which is an immediate danger for the Syrian people and for our collective security".
