How non-Facebook users are still subject to its 'globe-spanning surveillance'

How non-Facebook users are still subject to its 'globe-spanning surveillance'

Let's take a virtual stroll down memory lane and revisit the early days of our favorite social media platform.

Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg faced 44 senators and just about every media outlet in Washington, D.C., on April 10 and 11 to answer questions about the data scandal at his company.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg navigated through the first of two U.S. congressional hearings without making any further promises to support new legislation or change how the social network does business. The act requires companies to disclose the type of personal data they gather and give people the right to prevent businesses from selling their personal data, CNET reported on Thursday. But there was no clear thread among them as to how, or if, the government should step in.

"We continue to have these abuses and these data breaches", DeGette said. He met with the company's US-based vice-president of global policy management, Monika Bickert, and global deputy chief privacy officer, Stephen Deadman at a meeting in London.

One of the most popular things to do on Facebook years ago was to compile a wall of "flair", a term stolen, I'm guessing, from the popular film "Office Space". Information from as many as 87 million users was siphoned to Cambridge Analytica, a British firm with ties to President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, and Russian operatives used bogus accounts in an effort to sow discord and shape voter opinion during the campaign. Would an ad-free, paid version of Facebook work, anyway?

As for the federal Russian Federation probe that has occupied much of Washington's attention for months, he said he had not been interviewed by special counsel Mueller's team, but "I know we're working with them". I started Facebook, I run it, and, at the end of the day, I am responsible for what happens here. It was my mistake, and I'm sorry. He is working on artificial intelligence technology to weed out hate speech and at the same time ensure that they don't block people for the wrong reasons. But there's a third kind of data: data that is derived, inferred, or predicted from the data that people share and that is recorded about their behavior. And he's come a long way since he created the platform in his dorm room nearly 15 years ago.

This could very well explain why it is so hard for lawmakers to pin down Zuckerberg.

"Senator, the biggest thing I think we can do is implement it", Mr Zuckerberg responded, saying that Facebook already planned to comply voluntarily.

How many people were really affected by Facebook's data breach? "There needs to be much more transparency about what those set of tools is".

"The internet is growing in importance around the world in people's lives and I think that it is inevitable that there will need to be some regulation", Zuckerberg said during testimony before the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Thirteen percent voiced concern about spending too much time on Facebook.

Some New Zealand Facebook users that had their information shared with Cambridge Analytica have yet to be notified. Cambridge Analytica then obtained the data and was said to have used it to try to influence elections around the world.

Anna Eshoo, a California congresswoman whose district is adjacent to Facebook's Menlo Park headquarters, pressed Zuckerberg on whether the company would be willing to change its business model to protect individual privacy.
