Actor R. Lee Ermey of 'Full Metal Jacket' dies at 74

Kubrick' Full Metal Jacket production hired Ermey as a technical advisor but the legendary director ultimately hired him for the role after watching an instructional tape that showed the war veteran berating some of the film's extras. He spent a year and two months in Vietnam from 1968 and was released from active military duty due to medical reasons in 1972.

Posting to his Twitter account, he said: "It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ('The Gunny') passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia".

Well-known "Full Metal Jacket" actor- R. Lee Ermey has died. "Godspeed", he added, referencing the motto of the US Marines Corps, by which Ermey served from 1961 to 1971 when he was medically discharged. If you thought he was motivating in Full Metal Jacket you should have seen him on the firing line when points mattered.

Kubrick said at the time that 50 percent of the insulting dialogues were all Ermey's improvisation.

After taking some acting classes, one of Ermey's first roles was playing a helicopter pilot in the 1979 classic Apocalypse Now.

"In the course of hiring the Marine recruits, we interviewed hundreds of guys".

The 1987 film's Sgt. Hartman's no-nonsense style was so memorable film audiences couldn't believe they were watching a novice actor. He came up with about 150 pages of insults.

His performance proved so iconic that it not only spawned many timeless quotes like 'What is your major malfunction?', but also earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He made dozens of other appearances in film and television, a number of them in military roles.

According to Kubrick, Ermey also had a bad vehicle accident one night in the middle of production and was out for four and half months with broken ribs. In his time, Ermey has appeared in movies such as Mississippi Burning, Fletch Lives, Toy Soldiers, Sommersby, the 1993 take on Body Snatchers Murder In The First, Dead Man Walking abd the first three Toy Story movies, for which he voiced Sarge.
