China, Japan resume financial talks after 8-year hiatus

In a background briefing on Abe's visit Friday, the official, who asked not to be named, said the meetings at Trump's personal resort Mar-a-Lago in Florida would start in the afternoon on April 17 with a one-on-one meeting, followed by a small-group discussion that will include some of their top national security officials.

Wang spent eight years in Japan as a diplomat with three of those years as China's ambassador.

He added in the same post that Japan "has hit us hard on trade for years!", in an apparent gesture to pressure Abe before his arrival.

He said the 2 countries should also put their ties back on the right path of development so that they can open the way for a new future.

In addition to economic talks, China and Japan also agreed to work closely to push North Korea to abandon its nuclear programme.

The two sides reportedly agreed to continue to fully implement all relevant United Nations resolutions and to work together closely in order to realize the dismantlement of the North's nuclear weapons and missiles.

Chinese Foreign Minister was due in Tokyo Sunday for a visit seen as a sign of a gradual thaw between the Asian rivals, amid flurries of diplomacy over. Successful visits by Wang and Li would provide positive publicity at a crucial time for Abe, whose chances of winning a ruling party leadership election in September have been damaged by a series of allegations of cronyism and government cover-ups. Since taking office at the height of the dispute, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has sought rapprochement with his country's biggest trading partner. China is motivated by a lack of transparency in US policymaking, as well as tougher American security and trade stances, she added.

"For China, Trump is unstable and unreliable", said Yasuhiro Matsuda, a professor of global politics at the University of Tokyo. He urged Japan to use "history as a mirror", and not view each other as threats.
