Commonwealth Games 2018: Scotland's Callum Hawkins collapses in marathon

Australia's Michael Shelley retained his Commonwealth marathon title on a hot morning on the Gold Coast, but there was heartbreak for Scotland's Callum Hawkins as he suffered a distressing collapse while on his way to what looked set to be a dominant victory.

Radcliffe did defend race victor Shelley against social media criticism claiming he heartlessly ran past Hawkins on his way to claiming gold in the event. Certainly, there's no reason why there would be deliberate (medical) delays, and our thoughts are with the athlete.

Team Scotland added that Hawkins will remain in Gold Coast University Hospital overnight as a precaution and will be assessed again in the morning by their medical team.

Organisers said there are strict rules that can see athletes disqualified for seeking medical help.

The sight of Hawkins crashing into the bridge railing and collapsing on the road sparked an angry reaction from commentators and on social media, with Games organisers and nearby spectators criticised for their reaction.

He was lying in the road amid a long wait for medical attention as Shelley passed him. We're joyful to report he is sitting up and speaking alongside along with his dad and Group Scotland medical staff.

Mark Peters, Gold Coast 2018 chief executive, said: "I like many others was distressed to see a wonderful athlete like Callum collapse during the closing stages of today's marathon".

But the Scotland team issued a positive update on the runner on Twitter.

"They are professionally positioned as they are for our Gold Coast marathon when we have 30,000 people running".

It was the second heartbreaking collapse of the men's marathon, after a Namibian athlete was forced to pull out earlier in the event.

'I was also concerned about the behaviour of a small number of bystanders who chose to take images, ' he said.

According to GOLDOC, medical staff were posted at 500m intervals in the final kilometres of the course, and were equipped with radio communications. "I was thinking I needed to get to the line before the same thing happened to me, and try and hold on to a medal". "As soon as I used to be coming down the home straight I tried to hurry up, nonetheless I was merely gone". "I live here and train here all the time". When you get exhausted you can't slow down, you have to fight all the way to the end.

"I've spent the last four weeks with Callum and he's been great for me, giving me confidence and showing me how the best guys prepare so I learned a lot". Hawkins, who was fourth at the World Championships a year ago, was reported one hour after the race to be conscious.

His team-mate Saidi Juma Makula collapsed close to the finish line - one of seven of the 24 starters who did not complete the race - and was helped into an ambulance.
