Facebook Wants Users To Earn Money Exposing Data Abuses

The company has not been shy in discussing its work on artificial intelligence, which it uses in numerous ways to filter what it believes its users will be most interested in - and will keep them coming back for more. This data trove gives Facebook unparalleled commercial power and, as is becoming increasingly clear, the ability to influence significant events, including national elections.

Zuckerberg agreed to testify before Congress to address accusations of "violating the privacy" of users' personal data.

In a letter to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, dated April 11, the NPC said it would look into how Facebook shares personal data of Filipino users with third parties, and demand concrete action to protect their data privacy rights.

SEN. DURBIN: "Would you be comfortable sharing with us the name of the hotel you stayed in last night?"

Mark Zuckerberg did just fine in the Congressional hot seat. Consider that most news websites probably run dozens of third-party trackers in the background that capture personal identifying data of visitors without their knowledge, let alone consent.

It's kind of hard to stipulate that things posted on social media are meant to be private, since these are in fact public platforms, and it was only a matter of time and desire until the incredible volume of public postings on these applications were surveilled in this way. It is hard to decide what to make of Mark Zuckerberg's assertion that he will cooperate with the U.S. Congress even if it leads to new regulation. The company's founder has stated to media that it can not promise "GDPR-style privacy protection" for United States users.

Lujan pointed out that, "You've said everyone controls their data, but you're collecting data on people that are not even Facebook users who have never signed a consent, a privacy agreement". That Facebook created a mega-mall to sell your data is simply the extreme.

Facebook may have blundered by letting its data be misused by Cambridge Analytica. The company can also track people almost everywhere they go online, and it can see what apps people have installed on their phones.

The discussion with Sandberg had been "constructive and open", Jourova said. The trick is few people really understand what they're giving, or are capable of truly controlling it. Zuckerberg seemed to concede as much after a lawmaker brandished a stack of papers said to be Facebook's data collection and ad policy disclosures to its users.

According to the Techpinions survey, 17% of respondents indicated that they had deleted Facebook from their mobile devices, while 11% said they had removed it from their other devices.

And then there are young children.

This includes non-members who encounter it through the ubiquitous "like" button, or by downloading Facebook-connected apps such as WhatsApp or Instagram. This would allow Facebook to recruit new users younger than the current minimum age of 13, even as young as 6. "There is a wealth of research that shows that social media is harmful to adolescents, that excessive time on social media is linked to things like depression, unhappiness". This will also likely lead to a reduction in fake news and other information that has been challenging for people to deal with.

Also on Monday, a bipartisan group of attorneys-general representing 37 USA states wrote a joint letter to Facebook demanding answers to what led to the breach and how the company allowed it to happen. These senators have spent the majority of their lives without social media and are now deciding the future of Facebook regulations. If democracy is to survive in this fearless new world, mass movements of people will need to organize together to restrain these corporate behemoths and protect our digital commons.
