"It was just a media stunt:" Syrian refugees say airstrikes not enough

The United States, with Britain and France, launched 105 missiles and bombs to destroy three of the Syria's chemical weapons sites, with no reported fatalities so far, in response to Assad regime's alleged chemical weapons attacks that killed more than 40 people.

In fact, since Assad and others were led to believe that this would be a much bigger and more consequential attack than it was, especially by President Trump's own rhetoric, the very conscribed nature of the actual strikes might actually embolden the Syrian leader to use his remaining chemical weapons more frequently and with less restraint.

Trump says USA, allies will launch "precision strikes" until the Syrian government stops the use of chemical weapons. Inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons were due to visit Douma yesterday to inspect the site of the suspected gas attack. Officials in the USA and other Western countries have blamed the Syrian government for that attack.

However, Britain's United Nations ambassador Karen Pierce defended military action against Syria, saying it was "both right and legal" to launch strikes to alleviate humanitarian suffering.

She said the message from airstrikes that "crippled Syria's chemical weapons program" was "crystal clear".

Russian UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said after the vote.

The U.S. strikes likely successfully degraded Syrian chemical weapons capabilities.

In 2013, he said, "we should stay the hell out of Syria" and "Let the Arab League take care of Syria".

Jean-Claude Juncker said the suspected use of poison gas last week in the Syrian city of Douma was - as he puts it - a "heinous chemical weapons attack carried out by the Syrian regime". She said Russian Federation had thwarted diplomatic efforts to halt Assad's use of poison gas, leaving no option but force.

During an address to the Security Council, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all states "to show restraint in these unsafe circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate matters and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people".

The United Kingdom's Royal Air Force said four Tornado GR4s fighters jets joined in the operation, while France said it has deployed Mirage and Rafale fighter jets.

Trump's approach, he said, "is not about the balance of power in Syria".

She said Russian Federation needs to feel the consequences of protecting the Assad regime.

"We will continue to work with our worldwide partners to further investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria".

Immediately following Trump's televised address Friday night, announcing the USA -led strikes, loud explosions and thick smoke were reported in the Syrian capital city, Damascus.

"I support this targeted response to Assad's horrific use of chemical weapons against his own people, and we are right to act with our allies Great Britain and France against this violation of worldwide law".

The council failed on Tuesday to approve three draft resolutions on chemical weapons attacks in Syria.
